Updated Breathing for Birth Classes April, May, June 2020

I’ve received quite a few emails and messages about my breathing classes, wondering what’s going to be happening with them now that we are all being more cautious about going out and avoiding group gatherings because of the coronavirus.

I’ve thought very carefully about what to do and I’m going to be offering 2 options:  A modified, in-person class option and an online option.  These options will run during April,May, June and I’ll reconsider (and adjust) these options if circumstances deem necessary for better or worse (but hopefully eventually better).

In-person Weekday Classes:

I feel so strongly that in-person preparation is so important for birth.  Because of this, I will continue my in-person breathing classes BUT they will be limited to just 3 women to make sure there is plenty of space between attendees.  The studio room is well ventilated with open windows and doors to maintain good airflow during the classes, too.  Each class is one hour and they are a great way to practice useful breathing techniques to manage labour more effectively.

The schedule for these classes is as follows:

April 8th & 22nd Wednesday  11am-12pm

May 13th & 27th Wednesday  11am-12pm

June 10th & 24th Wednesday 11am-12pm

Cost per class per attendee: 2,500 yen (unfortunately the fee is temporarily raised due to restricting numbers)

Minimum of 2 attendees, maximum of 3

Online Zoom Classes:

For those who feel more comfortable staying at home, I am now offering Zoom classes for Breathing.  These classes will be 40 minutes long and will hopefully provide attendees with enough knowledge about how the way you breathe can help in labour along with some practical practice.

The schedule for these classes is as follows:

April 10th & 24th Friday 9:30-10:10am

May 8th & 22nd Friday 9:30-10:10am

June 12th & 26th Friday 9:30-10:10am

Cost per class per attendee: 1,000 yen

Minimum of 3 attendees, maximum of 8

In-person Couples Classes:

I will not be offering Couples Breathing for Birth Classes but will be offering an in-person semi-private (for 2 couples only) Birthing with Confidence class on April 11th and June 13th.  Details of the class are as follows:

Couples Breathing for Birth Classes 2020

Come along to my Couples Breathing for Birth Classes where both mum and dad-to-be can find out how the way in which we breathe during labour can make a big difference both mentally and physically.  These classes are a great chance for couples to connect together as they prepare for baby’s birth, and hopefully have a little fun, too.

In this one hour class, we will be getting in touch with our bodies and minds in preparation for labour and birth.  We will focus on our breathing and the ways in which it can help us during labour  – as an essential tool for relaxation in labour as well as the crucial role our breathing plays in helping us manage our contractions more effectively.

Breathing is the most natural thing in the world for us to do, and we breathe without even thinking that we are doing so.  Yet in labour it can be one of the most challenging parts – breathing regularly and effectively through contractions to help your uterus work as well as possible and giving you a way to stay in control of your labour can be hard work.  Through these classes, you’ll have the chance to focus just on your breathing for labour, and learn how you can use it to relax and prepare your mind for each stage of labour.

Combined together with other gentle relaxation techniques and massage, this one hour class should leave you feeling refreshed, more empowered and more in touch with your body.

It’s a great compliment to any other comprehensive birth preparation class you are doing or may do, and I encourage everyone to come to as many classes as they like to get the full benefit.

Day:  Every 2nd Saturday of the month

Time:  3:00-4:00pm

Place:  My Body My Pilates https://www.mybodymypilates.com/contact

Class fee:  1,500 yen per participant (3,000 per couple).  Minimum of 4 couples, maximum of 8.

Why is Breathing Important?

Why is it important to breathe deeply, regularly and rhythmically during labour?

💫 Steady, rhythmic breathing can be very calming – both physically and mentally, and using rest periods in between contractions to focus on relaxation breathing can help reset your mind and body in preparation for the next surge.

💫 It can help reduce tension and anxiety, and induce a more relaxed state in the labouring woman. The more relaxed and less panicked someone is in labour, the more the body’s natural endorphins can kick in and do their job to help counteract the intense feeling of the contractions.

💫 Deep breathing during contractions, using specific focusing techniques – such as counting or affirmations – can give your mind something to concentrate on doing. Having this focus can help the mother stay more relaxed overall during the contraction, which can help the contraction work more effectively in opening up the cervix and bringing baby down.

💫 Regular breathing gives the labouring woman a “job” to do that can feel productive, especially when used with vocalised breathing where you can use your voice to match the strength of the contraction

💫 As labour progresses and the strength of contractions continue to build, things can get overwhelming. But focusing on specific breathing techniques can promote a sense of control and a stronger sense of “I can do this”.

💫 Getting a good regular supply of oxygen is Very important for mum and baby to stay well and energised during a labour that, for some can take 1-2 days.

💫 The muscles of your uterus also need a good steady supply of oxygen to work effectively. In the same way that our breathing can help us during an intense exercise session, breathing is vital to helping the uterus working as well as it can during labour.

💫 The more practice someone does with breathing techniques before labour, the more automatic it becomes and the more natural it will feel to fall into these patterns of breathing on the day (or night) of labour.

Come along to one of my regular breathing classes to practice some breathing techniques and help you feel more confident about your upcoming labour!
