TV Programs about Labour and Childbirth

It’s been Golden Week here in Japan!  I hope everyone had a good one!

A client recently asked me what TV programs or videos I recommended about labour and childbirth.  The truth is there are so many!  But I thought I’d share a few of my favourites 🙂

One Born Every Minute – A documentary filmed in real maternity units and birth centres in the UK.   It follows the labours of real women and the midwives who attend their births.

The Business of Being Born – A documentary that explores what childbirth is like in the United States in recent times.  Produced by Ricki Lake after she had a disappointing first birth experience and wanted to know more.

Call the Midwife – A British drama set in the 1950s-60s, about a group of nurse midwives working in the East End of London.  It’s based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, a former nurse. (Not real-life labours of course, but a thoroughly good and entertaining program!)

If you search on YouTube for natural Childbirth, natural labour and so on, you’ll also get a whole lot of other videos that people have posted.

I personally was always into watching childbirth videos.  It’s something I enjoyed to do to help me prepare and I didn’t find they made me anxious at all.  But everyone is different. What I will say is that if you do watch programs or videos of labour, what you see won’t necessesarily be a reflection of how you’ll be during your labour.  Everyone is different, even the same women can be so different each time (that’s me!).  Labour is such a fascinating event and what our bodies do is incredible.  The journey the baby takes to be born is beyond words.  I always marvel at this.  If you watch any of the shows I mentioned, let me know what you think 🙂
